Heavy Truck & Equipment Air Cooling
Canada is a country of weather extremes, and especially here in Calgary, it can get absolutely sweltering in the summer. While the warm weather is great when you’re relaxing, it’s not so much fun when you’re stuck in traffic in the city, or staring down hundreds of miles of hot prairie highways. Overheating in a vehicle is not only a cause of minor irritation and drowsiness, it can even lead to dehydration and danger – which isn’t a good combination with big tractor-trailers or heavy utility vehicles. And that’s why a functional heavy truck air conditioning unit is a must for drivers on these blazing summer days.
Vehicle Air Conditioning Units
Once considered a luxury, air conditioning is now found in almost all modern vehicles. It uses a small amount of power from your engine to cool and recirculate the air inside your cab, offering a welcome relief from the sun. The process is not infinite, though – over time, the system drains and will need maintenance and refilling every so often in order to keep you cooled off.
The process works basically the same way that a home A/C unit does – using principles of evaporation and condensation, a chemical refrigerant (for example, most vehicles use freon) is heated and cooled at different parts of the system. This absorbs heat from inside the vehicle, returning the air as the cool breeze you’re expecting when you flip the switch, and releases that heat to the outside via small tubes, coils, and fans.
If you have air conditioning and you find that it’s not as effective as it once was, you may have a leak where regular air is getting into the tubes and replacing the refrigerant in the system. In this case, that leak will need to be patched up and the system topped up again. Since the refrigerant has potential to damage skin and tissue by near-instant freezing, it’s always best to have this done by a professionally trained mechanic.
Installing or Repairing Truck Air Conditioning
As the summer approaches, getting your A/C up and running will go a long way towards a comfortable and cool driving environment – especially if your work brings you into wide open prairie areas with little shade, or urban streets with dark pavement that heats up the ambient surroundings.
You may think that you don’t have the time or money to get the A/C going in your truck or other heavy-duty vehicle. But vehicles like that are exactly why West Tech Mobile exists. If you can’t make it to our shop, we get it, because we know how busy life can be.
