10 Tips For Dealing With Mechanics

Have you ever wondered what you can do to make your mechanic’s day better? Or how you can be the best customer they’ve had all month? The truth is, a lot of people have some bad habits when it comes to their mechanics, and while these habits certainly won’t affect the quality of the work performed, they will take a toll on the person doing it. If you want to be a favourite client, here are ten helpful tips to remember the next time you roll into a garage.

  1. Don’t hassle them constantly. That means, no calling every ten minutes to see if unit is done! Trust us, we are working as fast as we can, and we will call you when the job is done. We run a business, and we’re trying to move things along and bring in the next job, too, since that’s how we make our living.

  2. Don’t touch the tools. Those tools are ours, and you probably wouldn’t believe us if we told you how much they cost – especially the big ones that let us do the work we need to in order to fix your vehicles. We need them in good working order, and to be in the place where we expect to find them, if we’re going to be efficient and thorough with the job you want us to do.

  3. Don’t argue over the price. For continuity and ease of quoting, most of the work we do is at a flat rate – but sometimes it’s impossible to foresee every unknown and account for every factor, especially on large jobs. We do the best we can with our estimates, but they’re “estimates” for a reason. If you want it done right, you need to pay for the skills!

  4. Don’t follow the mechanics around while they work. Not only can this be dangerous for you, but it can be incredibly distracting for the person who’s trying to work. They can get uneasy, lose their train of thought, forget important numbers or codes, work less efficiently…and all of this can lead to missed diagnostics or subpar work. We know it is tempting when you've called us for roadside assistance, but let us do it right the first time and we’ll all be wrapping everything up sooner rather than later.

  5. Don’t do your own work – especially electrical! In big, complex machines, it may seem tempting to perform a DIY fix on a system – but in our experience, that always ends badly. There’s a reason our technicians are trained and skilled for just this kind of work: we know how to avoid causing even more problems when they’re fixing the original one, and we don’t inadvertently cause further damage. (Plus we can stay within the warranty!)

  6. Don’t supply your own parts: There are two reasons for this one. First, you get no warranty for third-party, questionably-sourced parts, so if the DIY fix your cousin performed doesn’t hold, you’ll be on the hook for more parts, more labour, and most likely an even bigger problem. Secondly, if you bring the part to us to install – and it’s the wrong size, shape, make, or fit – then it’s wasted your time and ours by tying up a repair bay. Leave the part sourcing to the experts.

  7. Don’t get mad over repair time. There’s a good chart to refer to when thinking about this: you can choose between low price, high quality, and short time, but you can’t choose all three. If we’re taking time to do a repair, it’s because we’re doing it right – not rushing it through. And we want to make sure that every vehicle driven off our property is going to work exactly as well as it should. So understand that quality work takes time to do well.

  8. Don’t tell mechanics how to do their job. These technicians have gotten their education in this work. They’ve invested thousands of hours of work and just as many dollars into it as a livelihood, and they are fully qualified to perform any diagnostics and repairs that they feel necessary. Of course, they’re only human, and everybody makes mistakes – but that’s how we all learn and become better. So let them do their job and they’ll leave yours up to you.

  9. Don’t tell a mechanic how great your last mechanic was in comparison. Why would you be here if the last guy was so great?

  10.  Don’t leave out parts of the story. If you leave out important information, or only tell us half of the information we need to diagnose the problem properly, it is likely going to take longer to figure out and fix – as well as costing more in diagnostic fees and potentially labour.

We hope these help you the next time you’re anxious about how long your repairs will take or how much they’ll cost. Remember, we’re all trying to do the best we can, so with a bit of patience and understanding, we’ll have your vehicle back to you as soon as possible – in even better shape than you expected!

That's a good point that different repairs can take more significant amounts of time. I imagine it can be frustrating when customers aren't patient about repairs. I'd be curious to know what kinds of tractor trailer repairs are more common and how long they take.

I do agree with you that it is important for us to not hassle a seller too often as they can easily feel restless. My sister and her husband are planning to buy a mobile truck service. I will keep this tip in mind and relay this information to them.

I'm glad you talked about when going to a mechanic's shop, you shouldn't leave any parts out of your story. My sister's car is making a weird noise, and she has been postponing taking it to a mechanic. But she doesn't remember when the noise started. I will tell her that's important to have all the information about when it started. Thanks for the information about how leaving information out will make it longer to get to the problem.

It's great that you mentioned it's important to avoid touching your mechanic's tools. One of my cousins drives a trailer, and the other day, he called me to pick him up. His truck had stopped working, and he needed to get to a place soon, so we had to leave the trailer there. That's why we need to find a mechanic to help my cousin out, and I think this article will help us out. I really appreciate your tips about how to deal with an auto service provider.

I need to get my trailer repaired, so I want to take it to a mechanic. It makes sense that I would want to respect their expertise! I can see how bothering someone who is fixing your vehicle could be really annoying for them.

It's good to know that you shouldn't keep calling to see when they are done. My husband has a truck at his work that needs to be taken to a diesel repair service in a couple of weeks once he finds one to work with, and he wanted to know some tips on how to work with one. I'll make sure to pass this information along to him as he searches for a diesel repair service for his truck.

I can imagine that a business could really benefit from getting the right kind of repair for the cars in their fleet in order to be more effective. Making sure that they can get some help from a professional could allow them to get the right equipment like a piston ring. It was interesting to learn about how the mechanics should have invested thousands of hours into a livelihood in order to get make sure that they have the proper qualifications that know how to work with their own tools.

You make a great point about making a list of all the parts you will need for your trailer. I need to get a trailer that connects to a gooseneck hitch. I'll have to also make sure that I have a truck strong enough to support it.

I like how you mentioned that it is important not to DIY the repair to avoid getting major issues to your vehicle. My uncle mentioned to me last night that he is hoping to find a reliable automotive service because he's not able to use his diesel-powered vehicle because of the engine breakdown and asked if I have any idea what is the best option to do. Thanks to this informative article and I'll be sure to tell him that he can consult a well-known diesel automotive service in town as they can answer all his inquiries and will provide good-quality service.

It made sense when you said that trying to fix complex machines on your own often ends up badly that's why it's better to bring it to mechanics since they are trained and skilled for just this kind of work. My father's diesel truck is acting up, that's why he tried to fix it himself, and now it's worse. It's time to look for diesel truck repair services in our area to fix the truck.

You made an excellent point that when dealing with mechanics to seek truck repair services, it is advisable that we ask for a quotation to determine the prices and fees. My brother mentioned that his truck is due for a repair following an accident a couple of weeks back. I will definitely encourage him to seek a professional and certified mechanic so that his truck will be properly repaired.

I appreciate you stating that the technicians are trained and knowledgeable and are aware of how to prevent creating more issues while resolving the current one. According to my brother, his automobile is out of alignment and unsteady when he is driving. I shall advise my brother to take his automobile to a mechanic to be repaired for his own safety.

I like the tip you gave that you should be patient and let your service provider do the job properly. My father mentioned a few nights ago that he was hoping to find a reliable panel beater service because he wants to repair the door panel of his car due to dents. He asked if I had any idea what would be the best option to consider. Thanks to this helpful article, I'll tell him he can consult a well-known smash repair service as they can provide good quality service.
