Cost of A Commercial Vehicle Inspection in Alberta
Commercial Vehicle Inspection Programs (CVIP) are an important part of keeping your truck or fleet roadworthy. These annual check-ups keep things running smoothly, and they’re necessary if you want to comply with different government regulations.
Since they’re mandatory, people often ask: how much does a CVIP cost in Calgary? Average Price of CVIP in Alberta
This is a question with no truly correct answer, as the cost of CVIP Alberta depends on a lot of factors that aren’t always easy to see from the outside. It’s about more than the axles involved – it’s also the condition they’re in, availability of specific parts, and others.
CVIPs at West Tech Mobile’s shop in the Foothills Industrial Park as of the time of this post... start around $250 before tax, and can reach $550 or more when all is said and done. Which means you’re probably asking. What Affects the Cost of CVIP in Alberta?Brakes
One of the main determiners of CVIP price is the brake system. Around 2010, the government changed the rules about brake inspections, and now for both electric and hydraulic brakes it is mandatory to take the wheels off. It’s not possible to do a visual inspection. These are covered by a flat rate on the menu pricing – another government rule, which ensures the prices are visible and easy to see, and can’t be changed from one customer to the next. These rates are set by how many axles there are.
With air brakes, we can alternate from one year to the next. If we do a visual inspection one year, the next time has to be “wheels off”. Of course, if a visual inspection shows something that requires the wheels to come off anyway, that would impact the time and the price, too. This might be the presence of oil, grease contamination, or a cracking/flaking of the brake shoes Time Involved
Price can be subject to change if we have to ask for additional time due to unforeseen issues. This may be wheels that haven’t been off in a long time being seized to the axle, rims that are seized to the hub, or other interference to the areas we are working on. Things like this take a lot more time and effort to even get the inspection started. However, even with these, there’s a rule that if the price change is $100 or more, we have to call the customer before any extra time is put in
Price of Parts
If, in the course of the inspection, a customer needs a part that changes the price by more than $100, there’s a rule that they must be notified before the part is installed. Just like with the labour and time mentioned above, this is to keep everyone on the same page about what costs are and how they are calculated.
Menu Pricing for CVIP
We follow government regulations, putting our prices on the menu and honouring those estimates to the best of our ability. However, we are not – nor is any company doing an inspection – liable for neglect on customer vehicles and equipment that are brought in.
This means that vehicles with rust, stripped bolts, or other problems will necessarily take more time than we can predict with our menu price. We have to inform customers about the extra time and costs, and if they don’t want to proceed, they will need to find another shop to do the inspection…but there won’t be many of them willing to do several extra hours of work only to get paid the flat rate from the menu.
